Kevin is responsible for overseeing the release program at the PAWS Wildlife Center. His daily duties may include: Identifying the Species of incoming patients, assessing animals for release, assessing release sites, capturing animals for release, performing releases or directing others to perform releases, filling out LOTS of paperwork after animals are released, maintaining a computer release site database and writing for Wild Again, PAWS News, Earth Share of Washington’s Earth Page and other publications.
Kevin’s favorite part of his job is seeing a formerly injured animal return to the wild, healthy and intact. He has many special moments at PAWS, “I once released an American Kestrel that had recovered after being hit by a car. The bird was released in a large field about 100 yards from where the car had hit him. The woman who had accidentally hit him with her car was at the release. I let her open the box to free the kestrel. He flew out of his transport box and circled overhead, calling loudly. The woman was amazed that this was the same bird that she had brought to PAWS, near death, only 4 weeks earlier. The release not only freed the kestrel, but it also freed the woman’s conscience, as she had been feeling extremely bad about hitting the bird. It was a very happy moment for everyone involved.”
